Caring for those Coastal Curls
It is no surprise that living by the beach causes hair to lose definition. No matter how you like to style and wear your hair, the humidity comes for us all.
My go to routine always involves a hydrating cleanser followed by a nourishing conditioner (and mask in between regular conditioning). I will use a leave in conditioner sometimes, other times just a cream. Less is more for me, but more is more for others. We all need our own specific routine and there truly is no one size fits all. If you welcome the light and airy curls, shy away from the heavier moisturizing products and lean into products that wont weigh your curls down.
Sometimes a cream is one and done, but state to state that is a different outcome. Most days I cant stop at a cream alone, I have to have a foam or gel. I coat my hair evenly and rely on lots of water to disperse products. I use my fingers, tools such as wet detanglers, combs, styling brushes etc. For hair that lasts multiple days, I go for maximum definition day one and keep my hands out of it.
But no matter what I try to avoid going to bed with wet hair, constantly putting my hair up wet or damp, slick backs too often, and overly tight hair accessories. Wet hair is most fragile and get stretch and snap when constantly put under stress. Treat those locks like the precious fabric they are.
Regular trims that get rid of or reduce dry or split ends will always result in hair that is easier to manage and less likely to break, knot or cause you to work harder in any way.
when going to bed, I try to sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase, put hair up on top of my head with a soft silky or satin scrunchy, and avoid friction at all costs.
The age old question, “should I air dry or diffuse?” This one is a personal preference. Typically you have to decide how often you want/can do your hair, how much definition, volume, and or both that you want, and will you be ok with less or more frizz as the days go on. For me, the more volume the better so I don’t mind the little bit of frizz from the curls loosening up. This is where products matter, and if you protect your hair at night.
Lastly I try to have patience, whether that be the dreaded wash day, refreshing curls, or the dew point being an ultimate high here at the coast. I remember my curls do have their own mind and Im not going to always have “control”. Sometimes you need a quick braid or two, maybe some accessories, or a complete restart and fresh perspective. No matter what, your curls are uniquely you, and always loved and welcomed in my space.
See you soon! As always, feel free to reach out with any questions you have! Emily
